UCO Studio by OBMI Celebrates Realized Design of Westin Resort & Spa Himalayas
Designed As An Antidote To Urban Chaos Where Tranquility Reigns Supreme
Nestled amidst 12 acres of lush, verdant mountains and perched at 4,500 feet above sea level, Westin Resort & Spa Himalayas opens near the wellness and yoga-capital of the world. A new hospitality landmark situated close to Rishikesh, the world’s centre for yoga, the interior design lead by UCO Studio creates a sanctuary of relaxation and regeneration for the property. The expansive resort features 141 guestrooms with garden villas with private pools along with meeting and event spaces, four distinctive restaurants and bars, and Rishikesh’s largest conference hall.
This secluded site in the Himalayan foothills is where the practice of yoga was founded. Our team wove threads of its spiritual history and tranquil landscape throughout the design. The Ganges River and mountains surrounding the property inspired the use of natural stone through the outdoor spaces, providing a beautiful juxtaposition to the lush landscaping. Local craftspeople carved ornate Jali screens and wove basketry elements from indigenous plants. Guests feel absolutely enveloped in nature, with organic forms featured throughout.
In Rishikesh, the historic holy town located on the right bank of the Ganga, there is an immutable rhythm of life. As the sun rises—its golden light turning tree tops into disco balls that reflect dazzling colours—temple goers, white water rafters and yogis rise, humming with the energy they derive from the mighty river. A recurring tree-ring motif suggests the fluid movement of a yoga flow sequence. Chairs, tables, soaker tubs, and lighting fixtures are shaped like seedpods and cocoons. Given the site’s high perch, we emphasized viewpoints, providing quiet spaces to absorb the natural beauty of the countryside and reflect on the flow of the river below.
Concentric circles inspired by drops of water and tree barks run across 12 acres of the property that offers guests a range of accommodation options from balcony rooms to garden suites and private villas. Each room, done up in a modern, sleek yet welcoming achieved by an earthy aesthetic and the use of natural materials. The property features 141 guestrooms with garden villas with private pools along with meeting and event spaces, four distinctive restaurants and bars, and Rishikesh’s largest conference hall.
Carrying forward this minimalist look and vibe are the resort’s guestrooms and suites spread along the main building’s two wings. Each room opens onto a balcony overlooking serene mountain views and each is furnished with natural, earth toned fabrics and wooden accents. With ambient settings like lighting, temperature and piped muzak perfectly balancing homely comforts and reined-in taste.
