The 5 C’s of Designing Luxury Travel Experiences

The landscape of the luxury travel industry has shifted to attracting a generation of educated, highly demanding travelers who are changing what they expect out of a luxury experience.

“The 5 C’s” are general principles that engage guests emotionally and physically before, during, and after a travel experience:

  1. Culture

Heritage and local culture are huge drivers of global travel. Travelers view themselves as “sophisticated explorers” of cultural heritage, performing arts, storytelling, craftmanship, and luxury products that showcase unique traditions and techniques.

While designing hospitality spaces, it is our goal to fully immerse guests into the fabric of the local culture and create an experience inspired by authenticity. This can mean integrating the work of local artisans, designing spaces influenced by the local vernacular, using traditional building materials, among others.

  1. Cuisine

For luxury travelers, culinary experiences are a hallmark of vacation. Whether it’s scheduling a cooking class, wine tasting, or fine dining, menu items offering local recipes or goods increases the allure and guests are willing to pay more for these experiences.

F&B is a growing sector in hospitality, by both contributing to the story, and in revenue. By offering unique culinary experiences, resorts and hotels attract the local population as well as travelers.

  1. Community

The typical demographic of luxury travelers does not travel in a large group, but they do desire social spaces and interactions as a part of their experience. Luxury leverages community in niche group activities such as bike rides, cooking classes, or private tours, that allow travelers to cultivate communal interest with others.

To cater to the traveler’s desire to create a sense of community, designers can include spaces that foster social interaction, this can be a beach club, or a venue that boasts exclusivity.

  1. Content

Marketing materials and real-time programming is a highlight of luxury travel. Clients want easy access to experiences coordinated by others and elevated branding.

  1. Customization

Luxury travelers want unique travel experiences that are fully personalized, from selection of meals, daytime activities, and nighttime events, choices are crucial for a customized product.

To design spaces that offer guests transformative journeys of discovery, it is our responsibility to immerse ourselves in the site’s features, history, culture, and people, to create an authentic experience for all those who have the privilege of experiencing it. With over 85 years of experience in the hospitality design industry we have seen the shifts in consumer behavior from year to year and decade to decade. Keeping the 5 C’s of designing in mind allows our team to determine the intangible elements that make a resort or hotel a timeless favorite.
