Visionary development leaders Talaat Moustafa Group (TMG) revealed their new 23 million square meter mega-project, SouthMED, located on the Mediterranean Sea. OBMI’s design philosophy for SouthMED centers on placemaking, wellbeing and sustainable practices. To create a hub for tourism and foreign investment features over 2,000 hotel rooms and numerous residential units to be managed by leading international hotel brands to ensure high occupancy year-round. The destination integrates experiences that promotes daily movement, social engagement, and immersion in nature to make most of the pristine beaches and vibrant atmosphere. SouthMED’s master plan features interconnected hubs that provide guests and owners access to various “character zones” that appeal to distinct lifestyles, including retail, sports, wellness, marina, and more. To increase accessibility throughout the different zones, designers positioned a connection of pathways featuring road sharing with designated lanes for biking and running and a large international marina capable of accommodating yachts and tourist ships, creating a continuous integration of immersion in nature within a bustling community.

SouthMED was methodically designed to allow space for 70,000 residential options to suit different preferences and family sizes and opportunity for residents to embrace a beachfront lifestyle, with pristine shores just a stone’s throw away from their homes. The residential options include stylish chalets designed for comfort and convenience, luxury villas featuring private gardens and direct access to communal facilities, and modern and spacious apartments with stunning views of the sea or landscaped areas. OBMI designers crafted a distinctive contemporary expression of Mediterranean and Egyptian architectural styles distinguished by expansive gardens, varied rooflines, geometrical patterns, and emphasized open floor plans and sleek silhouettes for the residences. These elements combined create a timeless design and invite a unique lifestyle centered on indoor-outdoor, resort-style living.

Through a holistic and organic design, the design team accentuated the qualities of the marine environment by interpreting the natural organic coral and marine life formations throughout the development. This provided a distinctive contemporary character and seamlessly transitioned guests between the natural landscape and the built environment. Envisioned as coastal escape, SouthMED boasts 100 blocks of waterfront space on the sea, emphasizing the development’s unparalleled views and ethos of an integrated lifestyle.

From golfing and spa retreats to water sports and beach activities, SouthMED provides ample opportunities for leisure and relaxation. The master plan combination of upscale resorts, hotels, and gated communities create an environment of luxury and comfort for residents. The project is embedded with flexibility tailored to accommodate a broad array of development scenarios over time as the community’s needs continue to evolve.
