Doug Kulig leads OBMI with a belief that great design begins with understanding people, purpose, and possibility.

As Chief Executive Officer, he works closely with clients to translate business goals and aspirations into places that are both meaningful and enduring. Known for his ability to bring clarity to complex challenges, Doug approaches each project as both designer and strategic advisor, guiding teams to create destinations that reflect culture, craft, and context.

Over the course of his career, Doug has designed and led multinational projects for some of the world’s most recognized luxury brands. Among them is the acclaimed Royal Mansour in Marrakech, a resort created to host royalty and heads of state while celebrating Morocco’s architectural traditions and extraordinary craftsmanship. His work at OBMI has also helped shape landmark developments such as Al Mouj in Muscat, Oman and Oil Nut Bay in the British Virgin Islands.

Doug began his career designing retail environments in the early 1980s before joining William Cox Architects in Miami. There, he served as lead architect on the historic renovation of the Vinoy Hotel in St. Petersburg, Florida. The project proved formative, shaping Doug’s approach to architecture as a practice that balances the creative ambitions of designers with the strategic goals of developers and brands. He joined OBMI in 1998 and has since played a central role in the firm’s growth and global portfolio.

Doug holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Miami and is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Urban Land Institute’s Recreation Council.

“Imagine having a king as your client and a brief to create the best hotel in the world: 7 stars, hors classe. Its success has greatly influenced our commitment to collaboration and how we take a really good idea and make it great.”

Originally from Tennessee and raised in Marathon in the Florida Keys, Doug still returns to the water whenever he can. Whether fishing in the Keys or building something by hand, he brings the same curiosity and craftsmanship to life outside the studio as he does to the work of architecture.
