Hospitality is our lens.

Grounded in a legacy of ninety years of hospitality design, and still shaped by curiosity.

Who we are

Hospitality taught us to look beyond form. To notice how people arrive, move, gather, and retreat; how light, material, and landscape shape experience; and how the smallest decisions can change the way a place is remembered. That way of seeing now informs our work across every scale and typology, from destinations and neighbourhoods to homes and interiors.

Our belief

We begin by reading the ground.

Since its Caribbean roots, climate and local knowledge have set the terms of each project. Because every site carries its own culture and history, we begin by reading the ground so that what we design belongs to where it stands. Much of our work is in remote and ecologically sensitive places, where restraint matters as much as intervention. The same principle applies in dense urban settings, where context, character, and the life around a site demand equal care. Wherever we work, we aim to leave each place better than we found it.

Our practice is at its best when it works as one, across studios and disciplines and alongside our clients. We listen before we propose and are honest about what we see; the result is something neither we nor the client would have reached alone. Beneath it all is a conviction that how a place makes people feel is what gives the work its meaning—and what has sustained the practice for ninety years.

Our Process

A project deepens as it moves forward.

01

ADVISORY

The earliest questions decide everything after them. Whether a place should exist at all, what it could become, who it is for, and what it has to earn. We work through those first, so that everything designed afterwards has something to answer to.

ENVISIONING

Then we go to the place and listen. Research into the site and the culture around it gives us a design narrative, the reference every later decision is measured against.

“We don't start sketching. The first thing we do is go to the place and listen to the community and the stories they have to tell.”

Master Planning

The narrative is set onto the ground: where people arrive, gather, and withdraw. We decide what gets built and what remain untouched, and the second decision shapes the place as much as the first.

Architecture

Form follows the environment. Climate, light, topography, and landscape set the terms. We work with the contours we find, shaping architecture that feels rooted in the site rather than placed upon it.

“Designing for the senses means activating every one of them when a person walks into a place. When you trigger an emotion or a feeling, that's how it lingers, how it becomes a memory. We like to see OBMI's identity as form that follows feeling. We begin our first lines with emotion.”

Interiors

The scale closes in: to the room, the material, the thing a hand touches. Here the narrative is felt rather than understood, in the temperature of a space, the way light crosses it, and what happens underfoot.

GUARDIANSHIP

Where we carry a project into construction, a thousand decisions can quietly pull it away from what it was meant to be. We hold each one against the original narrative, so the idea survives the build and reaches the people who will finally stand in the place.

People and culture

A practice is the judgement of its people.

Across nine studios and thirty-eight nationalities, OBMI is the designers and thinkers who turn a way of seeing into places people remember. The practice is the accumulated judgement and passion of our people, who understand, together, how a project comes to feel both singular and entirely of its ground wherever in the world it stands. Each generation carries the practice somewhere new.
